Atrophic rhinitis


Atrophic rhinitis is a condition characterized by nasal mucosa wasting. The underlying cause for the condition is usually unknown. Patient’s common complaints including the formation of large crusts, bleeding and offensive smell.


Treatment options

Current treatment strategies focused on symptomatic relief, such as nasal irrigation and drops, and complication management, such as operation. There are few methods to restore the mucosa.



The specific acupuncture technique we use acts on the nerve regulating the nasal mucosa. During the treatment, patients may experience electric sensation or water-gushing feeling. 


Treatment objects and protocol

The aim of treatment is to provide significant and sustainable relief. Complete resolution of the condition may be expected in some patients.  The 1st stage of treatment is 6 sessions, which is delivered over 3-4 weeks. The further stages of treatment depend on responses. Patients may need to have CT scans for treatment planning. 



Acupuncture is a well-tolerated safe treatment. The specific technique with strong stimulation may be used. Local anaesthesia can be offered, but the injection fo anaesthesia agent may cause more discomfort compared to needling.

*Patients are encouraged to contact Medicare for Extended Medicare Safety Net (EMSN). 80% rebate of the out-of-pocket fee may be claimed when the threshold is reached. The out-of-pocket cost may be as low as $132.
